Amakan is a traditional Filipino woven mat made from split bamboo or palm leaves, primarily used for walls in rural houses and shelters. Its purpose is to provide natural ventilation in tropical climates by allowing wind to flow through its porous structure. This porosity also helps to balance air pressure within a structure during strong winds, which can prevent roof damage. Amakan offers a rustic, traditional, and tropical aesthetic and is a sustainable, inexpensive building material often found in traditional Bahay kubo (nipa huts).
